Letter Quiz - Learn ABCs, write alphabet tracing, teach letters flashcards with learning games for kidsBy Tantrum AppsThe letter tracing on this is my favorite app early in the school year. It can be set to upper- or lowercase letters and students must stay within the borders to have it counted as a completed letter. Students will stick with the entire alphabet just to see the fireworks at the end. There is also a free version, but it only has half the alphabet. $1.99

Build a Word by WordWorldEven though this app is made for the iPhone, it is definitely worth having on the iPad. Students grab the letters to build an animal word (ant, bug, cow, pig, bee, duck, sheep, cat, frog, dog), pinch the letters together, and then the animated animals appears. Words are either all uppercase or all lowercase letters. Offers practice in visual discrimination, letter names, fine motor, and letter-word associations. There is a free lite version with fewer animals. $0.99

Build A Word - Easy Spelling - Learn to Spell Sight Words, Long Vowel and Short Vowel WordsBy @ReksI like this app because you can enter your own words or use their words. There is also a Build A Word Express (free) and Build A Word Phonics. You can choose to have the letter name or letter sound. $2.99

Download i-nigma Reader, Create Barcodes, and Record Your Own Message Using FotobabbleDownload a QR Reader like i-nigma to your iPad. Create your own barcodes at the i-nigma website <www.i-nigma.com/CreateBarcodes.html> , link the barcode to instant messages, websites, or recorded audio messages, and place the codes around your room. You can record messages that are attached to a web address using Fotobabble. The mobile version is very convenient to carry around the room to record student responses, but you will have to use the full site to get an address to link with the QR code. Using QR codes can give audio support to Read Around the Room activities, differentiate lessons, make bulletin boards interactive, add novelty to the morning message, and give general support to reading skills. All of these services are free.
